Snacks Replacing Meals?
Did you know the practice of eating three meals a day dates back to ancient Greece, but snacking only dates back about 100 years? Despite its late entry to the eating game, snacking has taken our world by storm and is only going to keep growing. In fact, a recent Wall Street Journal article entitled “Forget Dinner. It’s Always Snack Time in America” featured the following statistics: “The percentage of Americans who snack three or more times a day rose by 56% by 2010, according to the latest available government data. That’s up from roughly 20% in the 1990s and 10% in the late 1970s. ‘Snacking used to be an occasional thing, now it’s just kind of daily life,’ says Laurie Demeritt, chief executive of consumer tracker Hartman Group. ‘There are fewer rules.’”
Snacking has become the new norm, and nearly half of all Americans skip meals at least three times a week. Many are looking for portable and nutritional snacks, with enough protein to keep them full, while also delivering on their other nutritional needs. In 2013 the “nutritional snack and trail mixes” category posted a 9.9% growth, forcing many big food companies to switch tactics and move toward more single-serve and easily portable options.
