Back to School Breakfast: Yogurt Parfaits
Let your kids do the cooking! Whether it be for breakfast or as an afternoon snack, yogurt parfaits with classic and soft-baked granolas are sure to please.
Early mornings with groggy kids, trying to get them out the door with their homework completed and their bellies filled with a nutritious breakfast. Some days it’s a lot to ask, am I right? So why not let the kids do their own cooking? It’s really not as dangerous as it sounds, I promise! Enter the yogurt parfait: the perfect DIY breakfast any school-age kid can make by himself or herself. And it’s a nutritional powerhouse: protein and healthy bacteria in your yogurt, and whole grains with filling fiber in your granola. Plus, they’re customizable and downright delicious! How to make a basic yogurt parfait:
Step 1: Choose your yogurt
As in all aspects of yogurt parfaits, this is dependent on your preferences. We recommend either plain yogurt sweetened with a little honey, or something basic like vanilla or strawberry. You don’t want the yogurt competing with the granola; you just want it to be a creamy smooth base that blends all the flavors and textures together. The rest is up to you: full fat, low fat, fat free, sugar free, regular, Greek style. Experiment. Find your favorite.
Step 2: Choose your granola
This is the fun part. Choose one kind of granola or blend a couple favorites. One day choose a soft-baked granola, and the next go with a classic; maybe even go crazy on the third day and mix one of each. You can go old school with a nuts and oats crunchy granola like Nutty Honey, or go gourmet with a soft-baked Cherry Cobbler Granola. When you have options like Lehi Valley has options, you know it’s going to be a good morning.
Step 3: Choose your toppings (optional)
This is strictly optional, but if you’re feeling a little more creative add some fresh or dried fruit, maybe some additional nuts or seeds, or make a dessert parfait and add some chocolate sauce.
